The presentation of NESTOR project at the international event ''Le giornate di polizia locale e sicurezza urbana'

The project concerns the realisation of a fully functional next-generation holistic border surveillance system providing pre-frontier situational awareness beyond maritime and land borders following the concept of the European Integrated Border Management

Our participation in the event
Maggioli Group has organized the participation and presentation of the EU project NESTOR at the Local Police Conference 2022. The two-hour session will be held on September 16, 2022 and will be moderated by Maggioli, which leads the Communication, Dissemination, and Standardization activities of the project.

The object of our speech and the aim of this project
NESTOR address a common challenge among EU Member States: the protection and safeguarding of the European marine and land borders. To meet this challenge, NESTOR develops a next generation holistic border surveillance system providing pre-frontier situational awareness reaching maritime and land borders. The solution follows the concept of the European Integrated Border Management.

NESTOR integrates state of-the-art surveillance technologies into a holistic deployable system capable of detecting, assessing and efficiently responding to illegal activities. The NESTOR system will be enriched with accurate detection capabilities to optimally monitor border territory and will offer enhanced situational awareness and increased decision-making capacity to Law Enforcement Agencies by employing advanced data fusion and Artificial Intelligent techniques to multimodal feeds from numerous off-the-shelf devices.

Advanced visual analytics will be developed in a comprehensive framework presenting the acquired sensory readings and the detection outcomes. Mixed reality technologies will offer an effective coverage surveillance system to improve the overall operational image of the surveillance areas and qualitatively expand detection capabilities. The complete NESTOR concept will be assessed in three international trials in both land and maritime operations.

Project partners will present the objectives of the project, the user requirements that the NESTOR platform has to meet, the project's technical approach, the platform integration activities, as well as the project's input to standardization.

Maggioli Group will moderate the NESTOR session.

The importance of communicating and creating awareness of these themes
Strengthening of the external borders ifs one of the top priorities of the EU, The migratory crisis and the terrorist attacks in several EU countries have highlighted the need to reinforce the EU's external borders. The EU is working on concrete measures to safeguard Europe's security including surveillance of land and maritime borders. Technology plays a crucial role in this endeavor, as continuous advancements in surveillance through numerous and diverse sensors, information fusion and knowledge extraction, provide enhanced support for situational awareness and decision making to Law Enforcement Agencies at tactical and operational level. NESTOR builds a next generation border surveillance platform by integrating a number of technologies and based on requirements coming from Law Enforcement Agencies for safeguarding the European borders. The platform will be deployed and tested in three different trials.

The technologies developed by NESTOR are of direct interest of all Border Management and Law Enforcement Agencies as they provide significant support for their daily and sensitive operations. It is therefore important to raise awareness and communicate European research initiatives like NESTOR to these agencies as the outcome of these projects can significantly enhance their operations.
